Communication Lag
"The speed of light is the absolute limit. A distress call takes 20 minutes to reach Earth. By the time they answer, you are dead or saved."
Key Data
The Hostile Reality
Real-time internet does not exist. Web browsing is impossible. Crews operate autonomously ("Earth-Independent"). The Solar Conjunction phenomenon (when the Sun is between Mars and Earth) cuts all communications for 2 weeks every 2 years.
Current Tech (TRL 9)
Deep Space Network (DSN): Giant 70-meter antennas in California, Madrid, and Australia receiving faint signals from Martian orbiters (MRO, Odyssey) acting as relays for rovers.
Future Engineering
Optical Communications (Laser): Tested on the Psyche mission. Using lasers instead of radio to transmit data increases bandwidth 100-fold, allowing HD video (albeit delayed).
Interplanetary Internet (DTN): Disruption-tolerant protocols that store data at nodes until the link is re-established.
